Lecture Series
The Institute sponsors a distinguished speaker to deliver a lecture during the Spring Semester of each academic year. The purpose of this event is to bring in an outside perspective on pressing moral, political, and socioeconomic issues which impact the lives of our local, regional, and global community. Stay tuned for a calendar of upcoming events.
2019-2020: “Being Human” Lecture Series
We held on a series of lectures, panels, events, and performances on the theme of “Being human.” In a world dominated by technology, for every advantage these tools give us, they also serve to remind us to “not forget to be human.”
Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl
Each Fall, the Institute sponsors a team from SJNY to compete in The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl debate competition. The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) gives students a chance to enter an academic competition that combines excitement and fun with an educationally valuable experience in the areas of practical and professional ethics.
Hundreds of students and teams across the United States and Canada compete in 11 competitions each fall. The teams argue and defend their moral assessment of some of the most troubling and complex ethical issues facing society today. Questions address a wide array of topics in business and professional ethics, in personal relationships, and in social and political affairs.
The competition focuses on selected cases developed by APPE ethics faculty, researchers, and professionals; covering a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to, business, engineering, journalism, law, medicine, and social work. In the competitions students demonstrate their ability to (1) understand the facts of the case, (2) articulate the ethical principles involved in the case, (3) present an effective argument on how the case should be resolved, and (4) respond effectively to challenges put forth by the opposing team as well as the panel of expert judges.
Student Initiatives
Students are encouraged to help coordinate Institute events, and this may count toward their required community service credit requirements. Students may also opt to take a leadership role in designing and spearheading new IESJ Initiatives which speak to their particular interests.
